5 Things Shakespeare Taught Us About Love

Advice from poetsBy James Preece

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, who is probably the most famous playwright in history. While he is known for his writing skills, he was somewhat of a relationship expert, too. He knew exactly how to seduce, entice and romance just through the use of words.

Even today, Shakespeare can still help you find love. Match.com recently did a study and found that men who quoted him were 27% more likely to get interest from women. To celebrate his legacy, here are some of his very best quotes about love, dating and relationships.

Love is Love is Love is Love

“Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer's lease hath all too short a date:

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;

But thy eternal summer shall not fade

Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;

Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,

When in eternal lines to time thou growest:

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,

So long lives this and this gives life to thee.”

- Sonnet 18

This is one of Shakespeare's most well-known sonnets about love and perhaps his most powerful. It’s all about how love is eternal, never fading and brings hope.

Love is Sharing

“One half of me is yours, the other half yours

Mine own, I would say; but if mine, then yours,

And so all yours.”

- The Merchant of Venice 3.2

This is very simple to understand and is about the bond we share when in love. They both love each other so they are united. Never forget that you are a team working together and being part of a couple can be a wonderful thing.

Poets and Online Dating

Love is Deeper than Looks

"Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind;

And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind”

- Midsummer Night's Dream (Act 1, Scene 1)

This is something that we all need to remember, especially when online dating. When we fall in love, it has more to do with personality than looks. So do give people a chance and look deeper than their online dating profile photo if you really want to find a good match.

Love isn’t Rational

“Love is blind, and lovers cannot see, The pretty follies that themselves commit.”

- The Merchant of Venice 2.6

This wonderful quote is about how people aren't always rational when they fall in love. They may well say and do strange things that they might not otherwise have considered.

Love shouldn’t be Rushed Into

“Oh, how this spring of love resembleth, The uncertain glory of an April day, Which now shows all beauty of the Sun, And by and by a cloud takes all away”

- The Two Gentlemen of Verona 1.3.

Here Shakespeare warns not to fall in love too quickly. If you rush into a relationship then it may fizzle out before you’ve really had the chance to get to know each other. It’s wise to take things slowly when it comes to dating, so you ensure you are thinking with both your head AND your heart.
