Is it Worth Trying A Niche Online Dating Site?
By James Preece
When you are looking for an online dating site to try, the choice can seem overwhelming at first. As well as the mainstream sites, there are thousands of “niche" options, too. What this means is that they are more targeted towards specialised requirements. This is great if there is something that is really important to you or that you absolutely must have in a partner. There are sites out there based on religious beliefs, hobbies or lifestyle choices. Perhaps you only want to date cougars, runners or men with beards. If you can think of it then there is probably a site out there for you. But does having these options really make them better?
As a Dating Expert, I firmly believe that you are much more likely to have a happy, long term relationship if you are dating someone with similar values and lifestyle. If you want similar things in life they you naturally going to last longer. These nice online dating sites can certainly help find likeminded singles. You need to be able to find the ones that are going to work for you.
So first of all, I want to explain how a lot of these sites are run. Quite often, several sites are actually run by the same company who are what we call “white label dating sites." They have one big pool of singles with lots of different ways to filter them. You might see a vegetarian focussed or a site for over 50s. It’s like having multiple front doors to the same party. Each are promoted in their “niche" but ultimately you are free to contact the entire database. There’s nothing wrong with this as you’ll be sent targeted matches and your profile will be shown first to these members. I just want you to be aware so if you sign up you should make sure that you are only paying once to access this information.
Having said that, there are some excellent dedicated niche sites out there which each have their own database. These are the ones that I’d recommend you try. That’s because they are much more likely to be owned by companies who are continuously marketing to these markets. If singles can identify with the unique type of members advertised then there is a good chance they will want to join them. For example, DatingAgency.com have their own separate database that is aimed purely at the over 40s crowd. This eliminates timewasters and singles who are outside your desired age category. Or if you only want to date highly educated professionals, then you just need to start with a site such as EliteSingles.
Do remember that the larger, well known general sites such as match.com will allow you to search for many of the most common niches, too. They will have filters and advanced searches that you can use to find certain types of people. As they have much more members than most niche sites, you may find you have a better chance of meeting appropriate singles.
Niche dating sites are definitely worth trying if you really need something specific. If you don’t, then it’s always better to keep your options open. Opposites do sometimes attract and you’ll never know who you might be attracted to until you meet them face to face.
