Online Dating Success Stories: Meet Sarah & Phillip

Love onlineBy James Preece

As a Dating Coach, I know that Online Dating really can work to bring people together. So I’d like to share with you a fantastic interview I’ve just completed with a wonderful couple who met online.

Sarah and Phillip are London based professionals who met on Sarah is a Solicitor and Philip works for an advertising agency.

How old are you both?

Sarah: I'm 40 now but met Phillip when I was 39. Four years single. I found online dating easier to chat to people before meeting up.

Phillip: I'm 37 but was 35 when I met Sarah.

How long had you been single before meeting and what were you doing to find dates? What made you try online dating?

Sarah: Around ten months single although I was going out on dates. I had been online dating, on and off, for around 8 years as well as meeting people in real life. Had met a few people but never lasted longer than a couple of months. Around March time, one of my friends mentioned the online dating site. It seemed easy enough so gave it a go. Also I prefer it to other sites/apps as the only people that can contact you are people that you have swiped right for.

What did you like about each other's profiles/photos that interested you? Who messaged who first and what was the first message?

I found him attractive and quite cute. I think we both liked Nirvana and Foo Fighters so it seemed we had similar taste in music and both played guitar. He contacted me first with a "Ciao bella".... and I was instantly drawn in with the whole Italian thing! Then he said he was cooking lunch for his Mum, so that was an instant winner for me!

Phillip: I liked her looks and the fact that she had showed an interest and started to chat.

How long did you chat before you met up?

Sarah: We met up after two weeks, but the chatting only really lasted the first week... At the end of the first week we had arranged to meet the next weekend so the chat went quiet in between!

Who ultimately asked the other out to meet for a date?

Sarah: I think it was me... I suggested meeting up for a coffee sometime. I'd probably still be waiting if I left it to him!

What was it like meeting for the first time?

Sarah: It wasn't bad at all. I was hungover from the night before and had slept at my brother's flat so wasn't looking my best (in my mind anyway). It wasn't awkward at all. We met over Lakeside as it was a neutral place near both of us and went for coffee. A girl outside the shopping centre asked us for directions, and after she had gone we both cracked the same joke so I knew we'd get on! He chatted. A lot. I think he was a bit nervous but then I wasn't on best form!

Where are you are now in your relationship?

Sarah: We're now living together for 10 months now. We've talked about marriage but it's not high on our list of priorities. We're looking at moving out of his flat and buying a house later this year. Plans to start a family are under way...

Phillip: We're both very happy with things at this time. Enjoying lots of holidays together.

Do you have any thoughts/advice for others who are nervous/unsure about trying online dating?

Sarah: Yes! Through experience... Don't get drunk on a first date. Phillip's probably the only guy I've been on a date with and only drank coffee and soft drinks... and it's worked!

Also, I found from Online Dating that it's easier to meet up with a few people a week, rather than limiting yourself to one person.

Phillip: Yes, keep your options open and don't put all your eggs in one basket!

Sarah: The week before I met Phillip, I'd been on five dates... Two in one night for one of those days! Disappointed with all of them although we'd got on fine chatting online. I'd also recommend meeting up with/speaking on the phone with someone sooner rather than later. You avoid disappointment that way as you get an idea in your head of what this person is like, then when you meet them they're not what you had in mind!
